Spring Gardening Tips

Get your garden back into shape this spring.

Lawns

For a better, vibrant lawn this spring and summer, treat it to a regular feeding and watering. Apply a high nitrogen slow release fertilizer. Some fertilizers need only be reapplied between 6 to 12 weeks. For a thicker, healthier lawn, mow it as regularly as once a week – it also means it will generally need less water and less fertilizer – less time maintaining, more time enjoying. That’s better!

STIHL’s cordless lawn mower the RMA 370 will make light work of any mowing job – it’s lightweight and so simple to use. Simply pop in the charged battery, press start and mow away!

Hedges

For a solid, rectangular or square style hedge, it’s best to trim several times a year from Spring through to Autumn.

To keep the top level of your hedge, place a line of string just above the hedge as a guide for a straighter cut. A STIHL hedge trimmer will make the job easier for you and get a better, quicker result than with a pair of shears.

If your hedge is overgrown, get onto it in spring by pruning the side growth back almost all the way back to the main stem on one side only. Repeat on the other side the following spring (you might even be able to do it in late summer if the pruned side has regrown sufficiently).

A Cleaner Home & Garden

Winter can bring mould, grime and even algae to your decks, windows and driveway. Give it a spring clean blast away quickly and easily with a STIHL high pressure cleaner. It’ll lift off the dirt to reveal a cleaner surface and you can start enjoying your backyard. Now that’s better!

Leaf-Free Gutters

Clear your gutters out of soggy leaves that have collected during autumn and winter before the hot months arrive and make it a fire hazard.

A STIHL leaf blower with a gutter kit attachment is the perfect tool to rid your gutters of unwanted debris, quickly and easily. And that means better!

Summer Gardening Tips

One of the most important tips over Summer is to water regularly and wisely.

Lawn Care

For a lush green lawn, don’t mow or cut the grass too low. Low cutting, or ‘scalping’ makes for brown, bare and weed infested lawns.

Instead, mow your lawn as high as your mower allows. Longer turf helps protect the root system, keeping it cooler in hot temperatures, making it healthier and more robust, and a thick sward of it will stamp out weeds.

Water your lawn in the cool part of the day, generally in the morning. If you do have to water in the afternoon, make sure you leave enough time for leaves to dry out before sunset – this reduces the risk of mildew and other mould attacking leaves – and helps keep the mozzies at bay.

STIHL’s Cordless lawn mower the RMA 370 allows you to adjust the height of your cutting up to 70mm high and down to 20mm.

For your safety, always wear appropriate eye protection, and always wear enclosed shoes when mowing the lawn to protect your feet.

Home Chainsaw Care

Unless you work with chainsaws for a living, you probably won’t be using your chainsaw a lot during summer – especially as summer pruning can damage your trees.

To keep your chainsaw in tip top shape when it’s out of use, empty out the fuel tank so it doesn’t go off during the hot summer months.

This is also a good time to get your chain sharpened, so when you need to fire it back into life in Autumn, it’ll be in great shape.

Your local STIHL store offers a chain sharpening service. Find your closest one here and bring it in for a bit of TLC!

Pool Care

With summer around the corner, your pool will need a good clean before you jump in!

A STIHL RE 163 PLUS high pressure washer will blast away even the toughest dirt and grime, whether your pool is tiled or concreted.

Firstly, drain your pool, sweep out any debris and clean up dirt around the edges.

For the first pressure spray into the pool, use a universal cleaning detergent and spray it down. Let it sit for a few minutes to make sure heavy grime is lifted off. This will help lift dirt off the surface instead of pushing the dirt into it.

Make sure you hold the wand at a 45 degree angle to your surface – this will help lift dirt off the surface instead of pushing the dirt into it.

If you need a more direct force, work from a 45 degree to 90 degree angle.

Next, empty the detergent from your pressure washer and use just a water spray to remove other dirt and grime from your pool’s surface.

You’ll be left with a clean pool ready to be refilled with water and enjoyed for the rest of summer!

Autumn Gardening Tips

Autumn is a great time to rejuvenate a garden for the new season.

Leaves

With Autumn comes falling leaves, which means your leaf blower will get a good work out.

For those who simply want to rid their garden of leaves, a lightweight electric or petrol leaf blower will help get you there. Blow the leaves into a pile in the corner of your garden and then collect the pile when you’re done.

A vacuum shredder will suck up the leaves and debris, and you’ll simply need to dispose of the contents in the vacuum bag when you’re done.

If you’re after something quieter, a STIHL cordless blower is the perfect solution. It’s practically silent, lightweight and requires no fuel thanks to its high powered battery.

Hedges

Autumn is pruning season – it removes dead wood, promotes more flowering, creates a shapely, attractive plant and actually stimulates growth.

Trim your hedges before the onset of winter to keep them compact and bushy. When pruning, always use sharp blades. If the cut is torn or bruised, you’ll slow down the healing process.

A STIHL hedge trimmer‘s blades stay sharper for longer. All you should need to do to maintain the sharpness is spray it with STIHL’s resin spray.

If your blades are looking like they need a little extra TLC, be sure to take it in for a sharpening service at your local STIHL store. It’s quick, cost effective and will lengthen the life and effectiveness of the tool.

Lawn Care

Autumn is the perfect time to feed your lawn. You’ll have noticed the grass growth has slowed a little, mainly due to the cooler nights, but it should still be growing well thanks to the day’s warm weather.

Use a slow release lawn food to encourage a stronger root system and thicker blades. This process will rejuvenate a tired lawn to ready them for the onset of cool winter weather.

Giving your lawn a regular cut (once every 3 or 4 weeks) at no lower than 2.5cm high will put it in good stead for winter, where grass grows much slower.
